Pony beads, nylon thread, wire, steel support, ~9 ft x 10 ft

Gridley Chapel Lawn

nineties resolving power and aughts resolving power appropriate pixelated images of supernovae, gas rings, Herbig-Haro objects, globular clusters, binary star systems, and circumstellar disks made by the Hubble Space Telescope in the 90s and 2000s. Resolving power refers to an observatory's ability to make clear what is light years away. Made of plastic pony beads, a common ornament for braided styles, these larger-than-life tapestries depict new, cool skyscapes. If tapestries chronicle history, could they also be woven to chronicle aspirations for the future? Could they capture the essence of an era?

About the Artist

akeylah wellington works with found media from the 2000s. Her attention to technological and political developments from the era is her attempt to make sense of her experience of carceral-related displacement, loss, girlhood, generational inheritances, and time. Together, her works function as charms on the same bracelet, or hair decorations for one giant girl.
